Also, OpenSCAD both as a downloadable program as
well as an online app.
2015
The smartphone almanac spreadsheet is even simpler and better at auto updating fields on a change (Oct 11,
2015) The TurboCAD TCW files page has been removed as they were for older versions. The TurboCAD scripts and
special TCW files such as the solar mesh remain. Fixed a couple of links on the astro compass page. Typo in
smartphone almanac xls fixed, main spreadsheet illustratingShadows.xls also updated and main page has numbers
for English, Roman, Persian, and Hebrew as a reference. Corrected a comment on the choice 8 menu for
DeltaCAD vertical dials (vDec). TurboCAD and Excel (XLS) pages better laid out, wood and lino cut page added.
Minor improvement to smartphone almanac spreadsheet.
2014
mostly building dials up in Prescott AZ. Updated links for England and Australia re national curriculum
covering sundials. Supplemental Shadows is once again free to download. A small 4x4 wood cube dial made, but
instead of specific dial plates as is usually done, photos of actual dials the author has made were used, see notes
on the cube dial page. The Cubic Shadows booklet has been revised to correct spreadsheet names, and add two
cube dials made using photos of the author's large out door dials. Appendices (free) updated, no significant
change. IBM 1401 simulator recompiled and tested, only change was to the default file name for the autocoder
source code file name; the default hDial autocoder program has slightly better final printout notes.
Supplemental Shadows is no longer free, it is included with the download of the big book "Illustrating Time's
Shadow". Minor housekeeping on the website. Moved less used stuff from the main page. prices simplified. Added
a three page article on using altitude (and azimuth) dials at other than their design latitude. Main spreadsheet
detects longitude signs on main page (+ west)(- east) and advises on a sign mismatch. IBM 1401 youTube video url
added as well as one for the IBM 360. Link fixed for EOT article in the EOT page, The separate CD is no longer for
sale, the sole option to get the book now is the online download, or, the actual printed books. The printed big book
still comes with a CD of everything on this website. more language comparisons in the Programming Shadows
book. New ISBN and Library Congress numbers for the four books, Illustrating Time's Shadow, Supplemental
Shadows, Programming Shadows, and, the Appendices. The Android spreadsheets now have an additional
expanded Almanac and an additional expanded Astro Compass sheet; slower, but more refined data. Added more
pages on programming language comparisons and techniques to Programming Shadows, free on this web site.
Programming Shadows also has the C# section added, and a section on type casting or conversion, now over 400
pages! Added an hDial using justBASIC with turtle graphics. Added C# (C sharp) console, forms, and graphics
versions of an hDial along with notes on the latest Microsoft C# Visual Studio 2013 which is free. The Visual Basic
programs (VB Express, and NET 2003) are updated to Visual Studio 2013. Added an hDial in pure Java (from
scratch) along with notes for the free Eclipse IDE for Java, as well as notes on the free jIgloo forms GUI for Eclipse.
Perl macros for hDial and vDial, the hDial macro displays graphics. Dropped the Palmpilot stuff and its Pocket C (I
wish Pocket C was available on the Android),that kind of focus in the future will expand on the smartphones, such
as the Android, or Apple thing. Programming Shadows updated with Perl notes and helpful Perl explanations as
well as an OOP implementation of an hDial (text, not graphical). Notes on a C++ IDE that works on Windows 8
added to CPP page and CPP notes, along with some more dial programs (textual output). A C program using old
fashioned mainframe graphics output also. And for no good reason, I added a FORTRAN program to show the dial
in old fashioned graphics, like the C++ one. And while at, a Pascal program with old style graphical depiction.
And an Algol program with the old style graphics from the 1960s also! Programming Shadows is now free for you to
download and has been re-sequenced and article cross references added.
2013
Oct-Dec: Powerdraw Macros for h, v, p, mDials and vDec also, displaying the gnomon, and hour line angles; this
required a SIN, COS, TAN, ASN, ACS, ATAN, and SQRT algorithm to be developed (sin, cos, tan now good for
-360 to +450 degrees). Also, calendar or declination curve macro added. Powedraw is not well documented, but
does work well with these macros and trig functions. Supplemental Shadows also has a section on the
mathematical series for sin, cos, tan, asn, acs, atan, and sqrt, for implementation in a system that has no such
functions such as Powerdraw; also a note or two on programming issues for Italian lines. EOT tables added to 2020,
updated master spreadsheet for EOT in a leap year. FAQ added on EOT signs and why sundial users use a sign
opposite to that used by astronomers, as well as my ongoing rant about magnetic declination as opposed to
magnetic variation which I personally prefer). DeltaCAD macro for hDials, vDials, pDials, and mDials also now also
supports Italian hour lines (as hours UNTIL sunset), technically Italian hours are hours since the last sunset. Dial
Furniture macros also support Italian lines for h, v, p, m dials. Added three examples/variations of the graphical
method for a horizontal sundial in SIMPLE SHADOWS. Also minor tidying up of pictorials on pages 104, 105, and
106 of the big book; not errors, only cleaning up things. Added an hDial hr.ln.angle to hour in main spreadsheet.
Tested the latest NanoCAD 5 release and updated the notes accordingly.
Jly-Sep: main spreadsheet illustratingShadows.xls emphasizes Julian Day input is day of year vs astronomical
Julian Day, also added a user specific EOT table (EOT and longitude correction) for a store bought dial on the
main index work sheet (requested by some Farmer's Almanac users), and a few related minor changes. FAQ page
updates re a note on EOT differences in the master spreadsheet. Android X11 Basic almanac now shows user
lat/long and prompts cleaned up. Files in the big main book folder online here www.illustratingshadows.com/b3
cleaned up and old files removed. Added an FAQ about page 157 of Illustrating Time's Shadow, to clarify what
sorts of information are discussed on that page. The page is correct, this just emphasizes a couple of points.
Apr-Jun: answered a math question in FAQ page. Updated python notes to show that both FreeCAD and Blender
use python as a scripting language. A 3d printer printed sundial notes and files, also included in Supplemental
Shadows. Check dial number 772 on the NASS registry of sundials, I made this for the AZ Centenary project. For
no good reason at all here is a free BASIC hDial and almanac and link to a free BASIC interpreter for the Android,
this is X11-BASIC and it also works on Windows. Online vDial now has calendar or declination curves added, and,
vDec online tells you to use the calendarCurves program for adding declination curves to a vDec, as in chapters 16
and 23 of the big book. Added a java script program to display your latitude/longitude (if you give it permission),
IE9 and Firefox and smart phones (can be slow on smart phones). Privacy pages state that if you let your
latitude/longitude be displayed, it is NOT saved nor is it shared, you alone see it. Online dial designer hDial and
vDial and vDec (java script) can now get your lat/long/ref location. NanoCAD is a free programmable and drafting
CAD system, vDial, hDial, and vDec dial programs in VBS with calendar curve depiction as well as a nice hDial in
javaScript. Supplemental Shadows updated with very simple hDial, vDial, vDec dial calendar or declination curve
logic, great pictures. Also chapter 23 of the main book updated. Adding QR codes into printed and online books so
your smart phone can quickly go to the relevant web reference page. Main web page has ALMANACs,
HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL, and VERTICAL DECLINER online calculators, they use Java Script so no malicious
code, and links are here. The online hDial, vDial, and vDec dial generators can show graphics on up to date Java
Script enabled browsers. The graphical versions work on Android cell phones, and IE 9 and Firefox on PCs.
Programming Shadows book (available to those who have my book, CD, or online download) has a revised up to
date Java section, over and above new Java Script section, and some pure Java programs added with
"HOURLINE" as a class with methods for h, v, and vDec dials, etc. Excel Astrolabe work sheet and astrolabe macros
for DeltaCAD explain "earth radius" is only for scaling purposes, and should be left at 1 (or less) unless rescaling is
needed (not just desired!).
Jan-Mar: Renamed appendices files and files and the main book files, should be transparent as I updated all urls.
Dial furniture DeltaCAD macros added ASR1 to meridian west dial macro, and altitude and azimuth data.
DeltaCAD almanac has ASR also. FreeCAD vDec, vDial, hDial depict gnomon graphically. FreeCAD almanac,
pDial, mDial also have asr1 data. FreeCAD hDial, vDial, and vDec dials have calendar curves, sDial (Shepherd's
dial), and zDial (Winged azimuth) dials added, as well as the cDial (Cappucin). The FreeCAD booklet in the zip file
has examples of all the dial program output. The booklet Cutting Shadows has a south England cutout popup dial
added. TurboCAD parametric script models are updated. Trivial improvements to azimuth, shepherd, astrolabe,
and cappucin DeltaCAD macros. FreeCAD notes have an interesting comment on why the FreeCAD azimuth dial
differs from the DeltaCAD macro, and why both are correct! NOTE: I have hDial, vDial, vDec, pDial, and mDial
dialscripts for FreeCAD; which uses Python, this is an excellent free CAD system that is programmable. NOTE:
Blender is a free full CAD system, and is programmable using Python, scripts for hDial, vDial, and vDec dials are
here. NOTE: The updates and corrections file is updated. NOTE: Programming Shadows has been completely
revised, is 250+ pages and shows how to install programming systems, IDEs (integrated development environments)
and methods of doing graphics in many language systems, and the logic in the ASR, ALT, and AZI curves, systems
considered are such as: OOP, Excel, DeltaCAD (BASIC), FreeCAD (Python), JustBASIC, C, FORTRAN, Algol, ADA,
Pascal,COBOL, Lazarus, Visual Basic (Envelop, Express, .NET), JAVA, TurboCAD (VBS, and Parametric Script),
Euler, Octave, SciLab, Python, LISP (progeCAD and AutoCAD), and Blender (a free CAD system) Python scripts,
Early computers (IBM 1401 autocoder), IBM 360 (BAL), and the IBM 7094 (FORTRAN II).
ProgrammingShadows.pdf is in the main book folder, and is full of great hints and techniques. NOTE:
Supplemental Shadows is now over 100 pages NOTE: progeCAD is programmable using LISP, for non commercial
use is free, and is an alternative to DeltaCAD, hDial and vDial scripts are here. Check the LISP page on this web
site. NOTE: The vDec dial DeltaCAD macro now has options for alt and azi data, and ASR prayer times, and
calendar curves, tested on DeltaCAD 8. Also a new option for the mDial macro. NOTES: Windows 8 tested and
works well with all my stuff. Because Open Office is fully compatible with Excel, the .ODS files are being
obsoleted. The MSworks 95 spreadsheets .WKS are obsoleted also. The main spreadsheet illustratingShadows.xls
has been simplified.DeltaCAD 8 ~ with the Feb 12, 2013 patch ~ worksDeltaCAD 7 ~ with the 2013 patch ~ the
large macros will crash DeltaCAD: DeltaCAD 7 ~ without the 2013 patch ~ works, The book 3 supplement has good
stuff on two different vertical decliner formulae derivations, the old wive's trick (where it does and does not work),
the three different kinds of declination, and some interesting notes on LAT to STANDARD to STANDARD MEAN
TIME, and on Mass or Scratch dials and Saxon dials. The supplement also has an article on dial furniture
summarizing earlier stuff and adding new stuff for altitude and azimuth depiction. And a section on asr (Islamic)
depiction on a dial. More material that lies between the book and the appendices will be added as time goes by.
DeltaCAD macros for horizontal dials choice 3 now has altitude circles and azimuth lines as optional dial furniture,
and the vertical dial macro choice 7 now has azimuth lines and altitude dots. The main spreadsheet (xls and ods)
and smartphone almanac sheets now display the ASR start time, and DeltaCAD macros depict ASR1 and ASR2
information for hDials, vDials, pDials, and mDials.
2012 iPhone and Android spreadsheets are not only in a ZIP file for you to PC download, but since the
Androids do not support ZIP files the smartPhone web page now has separate XLS files you can now download for
almanac, astrocompass, h-dial, v-dial, and v-dec dials. Also, because of requests, am doing a print run of the big
book andit is perfect bound (not spiral) and ready first week in January. Added Kingsoft as an alternative to
e-droid-lite as a free spreadsheet. Added DL to the vertical decliner spreadsheets for iPhone and Android and
docsToGo, and vdec sheets show not only hour line angle from the vertical, but also from the substyle. Better
picture for ch 16 page 137 see updates page. Also working on a new book of supplemental material, articles and
formulae proofs, etc. It is stuff that could be in the big book, or the appendices, but is best placed in a new book
called SUPPLEMENTS, complete with articles, and its own cover, do not confuse this with the supplements on this
web site which are short notes or short extracts for the sole benefit of web site users. Am working on a sundial for a
park in Phoenix, it will be an interesting case study. Changed notes in EOTandLONG worksheet, notes only, not
data Nov 16. Added to h-dial DeltaCAD macro a note on its main screen, no process change at all. How to depict
daylight saving time on a dial. Appendix 10 has notes on depicting summer time (daylight saving time). Page 335
of ch 30 last few paragraphs reworded to be easier to understand. Appendix 10 has list of all case studies on the CD
and www. All web urls in appendix 10 have been re-verified and updated. Smart phone pages uses links to .pdf and
to .xls and no longer to .ZIP files which iPhones and Android dislike. The book Micro Shadows now has a smart
phone formatted version, see the Android or iPhone page. Ditto for Simple Shadows, and Cubic Shadows: the
smartphone versions of these books ARE ABBREVIATED. Dial types in perspective added into appendices. Added
clarifying note to PDA/Android/iPhone almanac spreadsheet. Added a note to main spreadsheet when using a dial
at a location other than it was designed for. Also have illustratingShadows.zip which is the main spreadsheet in a
zip file because some ISPs clobber the .xls version on download. Main spreadsheet XLS and ODS transit worksheet
longitude improved. DeltaCAD v-dial macro typo in choice 7 final display on longitude (typo only, not bad data). A
couple of case studies updated with more plates. Testing a dial designed for one lat/long but at a different lat/long
(see case studies), and also notes added in appendix as the last couple of pages. P120 main book insignificant
typo. Minor tidyup of main spreadsheet (XLS and OLS), in addition to YOU entering the Julian day, you MUST also
enter the desired EOT (it shows you the current EOT, you simply enter it in a yellow box), makes tailoring some work
sheets much easier, quite a few people wanted this. Better prompts for this change also. Appendices page 20 mag
decl/var updated and notes added on magnetic declination change over the years. A couple of minor comment
changes. DeltaCAD v-dial and h-dial macros have user selectable solar declinations, no longer fixed. Minor typos
in calendar macros (invisible to users). Main big spreadsheet updated to warn if entered Julian Day is not within a
day of the actual current day. The printed book is available again. A couple of minor improvements to misc items.
Main spreadsheet shows good sun declinations for the ambiguous months, p277 in the main book updated with that
table also. ( 23.44, 20 to 18, 10 to 12, 0 ) The printed book is currently out of stock, unavailable. Please select the
online download or the CD and print it at any local copy shop. The case study page revised along with some other
pages so they will be more friendly on Androids and iPhones. TurboViewer is a free cell phone app, and I have a
few DWG/DXF files you can see in 2D and 3D, created in TurboCAD. You do NOT need TurboCAD to view these,
just use the free TurboViewer app for the iPhone or Android. The USA airmail prices overseas have gone up by
$10, I have no control over that, sorry, see Paypal page. Master spreadsheet added a note re JD, and very nice
Italian, Babylonian, and day length tables to simplify adding them to any dial. DeltaCAD macro for full calendar
curves has an added recommendation note, changed default lat/lng, h-dial improved also. Another h-dial case
study added. One minor typo, better spirit level for Android cel phone. New case study added. DeltaCAB v dial
macro improved notes for v-dec dial. Spreadsheets for the Android cel phone as well as notes on some useful tools
for the diallist such as a compass and level. Small PDA A0.0 spreadsheet azimuth table fixed, ok in all other
spreadsheets. e-Droid-cell Light spreadsheets for the Android, free, and it works, check my ANDROID page for
details. Appendices updated with e-Droid-cell in the section on spreadsheets. Nicer Android V and H dial sheet and
added vDec also, and astro compass. The main Excel and Open Office master spread sheet updated with a typo,
no change to any formulae or data.

vertical south facing dial. A refinement to the solar declination table in the appendices (not a correction, just a
refinement). Added words SUN FAST or SLOW to main spreadsheet main screen, minor aesthetics change in the
spreadsheet. DeltaCAD v-dial macros: MAIN-v-dials.bas and MAIN-v-dials[f].bas had a typo in choice 7, the legend
said LAT when it should show LAT and COLAT. Misc cleanup of messages. Main spreadsheet Excel/OpenOffice
easier to use for Italian and Babylonian hour lines on the sunrise/set sheets, which also use 4 average astro EOT,
hyperlinks for Open Office fixed. Almanacs for Phoenix and Silver City updated, more may follow. New case study
added for a ceramic floor tile used as a v-dial with Italian lines and a noon analemma, see CASE STUDY page.
Less used worksheets removed from main spreadsheet, eg v-dial analemma removed but the more common h-dial
analemma retained, they were mostly for educational purposes anyway. Also the pie graph hour line depiction
removed since all dial plates have true hour line depictions. I have finished with spreadsheet revisions Oct 25,
2011 :) ANALEMMA.BAS notes added re southern hemisphere, and analemma page on this site updated re N and
S hemispheres. PayPal page improved for overseas (non USA) purchasers. Updated Casio fx-9860G notes.

has a new: MAIN-calendar-curvesFULL.bas macro, misc minor improvements in other areas also. Minor changes
to powerpoints re true north locating.
2010 The Casio fx-9860G Slim graphing calculator has a spreadsheet function, and this page has some
helpful hints as well as an EOT, V-dial, h-dial, and decl/sunrise/set spreadsheet. The free appendices have been
updated in formula section with a simple way of telling if radians or degrees are intended. The master spreadsheets
.XLS and .ODS changed in the sunset/rise worksheets now the 5th, 15th, and 25th as opposed to the 1st, 10th, and
20th. Chapter 18 inclined decliners has two pages with minor spreadsheet simplifications, no substantive change,
but Excel, Open Office, and DeltaCAD inclined decliners much simplified and much improved for easier, less
involved, less complicated, more intuitive use. Two typos fixed, one in Cubic Shadows, one in Simple Shadows.
Minor improvements to the master spreadsheet (.xls and .ods) in sunrise/set, helps with Italian lines; and better
options for sundial relocation (EOT and LONG). Windows 7 works with most stuff, but for VRML you must
download the latest Cortona VRML plugin see here. *** NOTE: quickShadows.* has been renamed
to cubicShadows.* Also, new "cubicShadows.bas" DeltaCAD macro for no real reason except uses true quadrant
sensing using local apparent time, does 24 hours, and has an equinox line. It handles V and H dials, and M as well,
calendar curves, almanac, EOT, DECL and simple v-dec all in one macro. Online book of Illustrating Time's
Shadow is back at $10. *** NOTE: quickShadows.* has been renamed to cubicShadows.* as of July 24, 2010.
